NICK CLUBE Guitar and Vocals Born: 1957 Home: Hertfordshire Guitar: Fender Stratocaster Amplification: HH When Down at Heel set about finding a lead singer they found him in Nick Clube who met up with Nigel Sattin one fateful day in 1977 at a local music store. Sattin and Simonsen had a rather uneasy relationship that gave an 'edge' to the band's music, and Clube became the calming influence in the middle, bringing a more considered style to the music. Joining just prior to the band's third or fourth gig, he soon added guitar playing to his vocal duties and collaborated in writng with Simonsen. They developed a unique twin guitar sound with their contrasting guitar sounds. Clube brought a less angular style, a cleaner sound with influences from further afield that melded well into the Down At Heel sound. His vocals were less gritty than those of Sattin and provided a useful contrast. By the end of 1977 the trio of Simonsen, Sattin and Clube made up the essential core of the band. A rather shy and retiring man off stage, Clube enjoyed the limelight of gigs and the role of frontman, revelling in being part of a great rock band. Having enjoyed a varied semi-pro career in music since he had this to say, "Down At Heel were the best. No band has ever excited me the way that one did. Who knows where we might have gone had we kept it together?" |
