NIGEL SATTIN Bass Guitar and Vocals Born: 1957 Home: Cornwall Guitar: Fender Precision / Rickenbacker 4001 Amplification: Hiwatt Educated in Bushey, Nigel Sattin was the band's Southern connection - no Lancastrian accent for him! He is one of life's 'networkers' and it was his gregarious nature that brought the necessary people together to form the band in the first place, and then to find it gigs. It was he who introduced the guitarist Nick Clube and long-serving roadie, Ian 'Miffy' Smith. Sattin is a hugely talented bass player, and the band's sound was forged on his driving rhythms and lyrical fills. He could pull out the best from any drummer and transformed Down At Heel into a powerhouse rock outfit. His gruff, bluesy voice was ideally suited to the early compostions. Talking of which, he is a fine songsmith with a good ear for music that works well for the listener, and a talent for incisive lyrics. 'Lady Airs and Graces' and 'Supporting Cast' being two fine examples. It is one of rock music's tragedies that Sattin never made the big time. And sad to say that after a spell in another Blackpool band he has spent much of his life playing lead guitar instead of bass. In some ways it was his need to be in the spotlight as befitted his ability and his feeling that Down At Heel with its twin guitarists prevented him doing so that precipitated this switch to guitar. |
